Can the bank close a current account on its own initiative?

A credit institution has the right to terminate account servicing in the following situations:

  • No transactions have been made on the account for six months.
  • The account has a zero or negative balance, and no funds have been credited to it over the past six months.
  • The legal entity has been liquidated.

The account may also be closed if the bank has doubts about the legality of the transactions. For example, it may suspect that the account is being used for questionable financial schemes. In that case, the bank will suspend all transactions and request supporting documents. If the client cannot substantiate the source of funds, the bank has the right to close the account.

In all cases (except for the liquidation of the company), the bank notifies the client of its decision. If funds remain in the account, they can be withdrawn. For example, they can be transferred to another account or received in cash.
