Can the bank close a current account?

A credit institution is entitled to close a client's current account in the following cases:

  • no transactions have been made on the account for six months;
  • the account has a zero or negative balance, and no funds have been credited to it for 6 months;
  • the legal entity has been liquidated.

In addition, the account may be closed if the bank suspects the client of using Current Account Services for unlawful purposes. In such situations, the organization is entitled to suspend transactions and request supporting documents. If the client is unable to prove the legality of the incoming funds, the account will be closed.

Except in the case of liquidation, the bank notifies the client of the decision in advance. If there are funds remaining in the account, they can be transferred to another account or received in cash.
