What does the merchant acquiring fee depend on?

The acquiring fee is determined based on business turnover, the number of retail outlets, and the company’s line of business. It includes:

  • interbank fee (IRF);
  • payment system fees for transaction processing;
  • processing services;
  • equipment maintenance costs;
  • other expenses.

The main part of the fee is IRF. The acquiring bank transfers it to the financial institution that issued the card. The rate depends on a number of factors:

  • Card type — the higher the class, the higher the fee.
  • Type of activity — different industries have their own tariffs depending on the assigned MCC.
  • Payment method — magnetic stripe transactions cost more than contactless payments.
